OISO1: only one deep profile (at 56°S).
INTERNAL OISO CONSISTENCY:
6 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is -0.4 (+/-12.3)
ppm.
3 cross overs show no significant differences (<5 ppm) and involve cruises that
are thought to have no significant offset in salinity. When the offsets
suggested for the other cruises are taken into account the average of all cross
overs is +3.9 (+/-1.4) ppm. This suggests that no adjustment would be required.
OTHER CROSS OVERS:
The cross over with cruise INDIGO3 shows an offset of +1 (+/-7) ppm, which
supports no adjustment.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the regional analyses above I suggest no adjustment for salinity.

OISO1: only one deep profile (at 56°S).
INTERNAL OISO CONSISTENCY:
6 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is +1.3 (+/-3.3)
umol/kg.
5 cross overs show no significant differences (<4 umol/kg) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no offset in TCO2. When the offsets suggested for the
other cruises are taken into account the average of all cross overs is -0.3
(+/-1.1) umol/kg. This suggests that no adjustment would be required.
OTHER CROSS OVERS:
The cross over with cruise INDIGO3 shows an offset of -6.0 (+/-2.7) umol/kg, but
INDIGO3 is known to have high TCO2 values by about 5-6 umol/kg (according to
this study and GLODAP). This supports no adjustment.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the regional analyses above I suggest no adjustment for TCO2.

OISO1: only one deep profile (at 56°S).
INTERNAL OISO CONSISTENCY:
5 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is +5.7 (+/-2.4)
umol/kg.
2 cross overs show no significant differences (<5 umol/kg) and involve cruises
that were conducted only 1 or 2 years after this one. This suggests that no
adjustment would be required.
Interestingly, differences in alkalinity increase with time, from +2 umol/kg
over a 1 year-period to +8 umol/kg over 6 years. The dependence with time
suggests that the differences observed are not systematic offsets, but would
rather be a real signal (gradual decrease in alkalinity in Antarctic deep
waters). Note that when assuming a gradual decrease of 1 umol/kg/yr all cross
overs suggest no significant offset.
OTHER CROSS OVERS:
The cross over with the cruise INDIGO3 (conducted 11 years before this one and
known to have no offset in TCO2) shows a difference of -9.6 (+/-3.5) umol/kg,
but when accounting for a decrease in alkalinity of 11 umol/kg it translates
into no significant differences. This supports the analysis above.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the regional analyses above I suggest no adjustment for alkalinity.

35MF19980121 - nitrate
OISO1: only one deep profile (at 56°S).
INTERNAL OISO CONSISTENCY:
6 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 0.973 (+/-0.056).
Only 2 cross overs show no significant differences (<2%), only 1 of them
involving a cruise that is thought to have no offset in nitrate. When the
offsets suggested for the other cruises are taken into account the average of
all cross overs is 0.978 (+/-0.058). The large scatter around the mean suggests
that natural variability could also play a role in the observed differences.
OTHER CROSS OVERS:
The cross over with the cruise INDIGO3 shows a ratio of 1.034 (+/-0.022), but
INDIGO3 is thought to have low nitrate values. When the suggested offset is
taken into account as well as the suggested natural variability, no significant
difference is found (1.001).
CONCLUSION:
Given the large uncertainty attached to the regional analyses above due to
natural variability in the Antarctic region, I have no recommendation for
nitrate.

OISO1: only one deep profile (at 56°S).
INTERNAL OISO CONSISTENCY:
6 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 0.988 (+/-0.047).
Only 2 cross overs show no significant differences (<2%). The one that involves
a cruise that is thought to have no offset in silicate shows an offset of 0.98
(+/-0.01). When the offsets suggested for the other cruises as well as the
suggested natural variability are taken into account the average of all cross
overs is 0.979 (+/-0.002). This suggests that a small adjustment could be
required, but it is not warranted since Antarctic deep waters are entitled to
natural variability which could play a role in the observed differences (all
cross overs are found at 56°S).
OTHER CROSS OVERS:
The cross over with the cruise INDIGO3 shows a ratio of 0.919 (+/-0.013), but
INDIGO3 is thought to have high silicate values. When the suggested offset is
taken into account as well as the suggested natural variability, a good
agreement is found with the analysis above (0.977).
CONCLUSION:
Given the large uncertainty attached to the regional analyses above due to
natural variability in the Antarctic region, I have no recommendation for
silicate.

35MF19980121 - oxygen
OISO1: only one deep profile (at 56°S).
INTERNAL OISO CONSISTENCY:
6 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 1.012 (+/-0.029).
4 cross overs show no significant differences (<1%), and 3 of them involve
cruises that are thought to have no offset in oxygen. When the offsets suggested
for the other cruises are taken into account the average of all cross overs is
1.001 (+/-0.005). This suggests that no adjustment would be required.
OTHER CROSS OVERS:
The cross over with the cruise INDIGO3 shows a ratio of 1.004 (+/-0.007), which
supports the analysis above.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the regional analyses above I suggest no adjustment for oxygen.

35MF19980121 - silicate
CONCLUSION:
Given the large uncertainty attached to the regional analyses above due to
natural variability in the Antarctic region, I have no recommendation for
silicate.

CONCLUSION:
Given the large uncertainty attached to the regional analyses above due to
natural variability in the Antarctic region, I have no recommendation for
nitrate.

35MF19980121 - alkalinity

35MF19980121 - tco2

35MF19980121 - salinity
