49NZ20031209 - salinity
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is -1.8 ppm (n=2).
No suggestion from the global inversion (WDLSQ).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
3 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is -0.7 (+/-0.8)
ppm.
All cross overs show no significant differences (<5 ppm) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no significant offset in salinity. This suggests that
no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the analysis above I suggest no adjustment for salinity.

49NZ20031209 - tco2
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is -7.9 umol/kg (n=2).
No suggestion from the global inversion (WDLSQ).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
3 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is -8.0 (+/-12.0)
umol/kg.
2 cross overs show no significant differences (<4 umol/kg) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no significant offset in TCO2. This suggests that no
adjustment would be required. Note that the other cross over, which indicates an
offset of 21.8 (+/-3.1) umol/kg, involves the cruise GEOSECS_INDIAN which is
known to have high TCO2 values (by about 22-23 umol/kg according to this study
and GLODAP). This supports no adjustment.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the analysis above I suggest no adjustment for TCO2.

+7 seems more appropriate, now based on more xovers, and additional inversion
results. An 'improvement' figure for an inversion of Indian + Southern Ocean
cruises is attached.

49NZ20031209 - alkalinity
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is -9.0 umol/kg (n=2).
No suggestion from the global inversion (WDLSQ).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
3 cross overs were analyzed, but one is discarded due to large uncertainty (with
GEOSECS_INDIAN). The average of the 2 considered cross overs is -7.8 (+/-6.7)
umol/kg.
1 cross over shows no significant differences (<5 umol/kg), but it involves the
cruise INDIGO2 which is known to have low alkalinity values. When taking into
account an offset of -6.8 umol/kg for INDIGO2 as suggested in GLODAP, this
suggests that an adjustment of 9.9 mol/kg could be required. This number is
supported by the cross over with cruise 317519950922 which indicates an offset
of 12.6 (+/-2.4) umol/kg (note that this cruise is thought to have slightly high
alkalinity values by about 2 umol/kg).
CONCLUSION:
The analysis above suggests that an adjustment of about 10 umol/kg could be
required. This result is supported by a previous analysis conducted
independently by the data PIs who concluded the following: "It is evident that
alkalinity values obtained in the BEAGLE are systematically lower by 5 to 10
umol/kg than those in the WOCE" (page 81 in the BEAGLE cruise report, see the
Cruise ReadMe file for reference).
Based on this I suggest an adjustment of +10 umol/kg for alkalinity.

All cross overs show no significant differences (<2%) and involve cruises that

would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The regional analysis agrees with the idea that high quality nutrients
measurements were performed during the BEAGLE cruise.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for phosphate

49NZ20031209 - silicate
Based on 13 xovers, various inversions (incl. 'Southern Hemisphere') inversion
suggest +1.5%. Xovers are of high quality, adjustment appears warranted.

49NZ20031209 - alkalinity
+7 seems more appropriate, now based on more xovers, and additional inversion
results. An 'improvement' figure for an inversion of Indian + Southern Ocean
cruises is attached.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 0.997 (n=2).
No suggestion from the global inversion (WDLSQ).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
3 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 0.996 (+/-0.003).
All cross overs show no significant differences (<1%) and involve cruises that
are thought to have no offset in oxygen. This suggests that no adjustment would
be required.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the analysis above I suggest no adjustment for oxygen

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 0.992 (n=2).
No suggestion from the global inversion (WDLSQ).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
3 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 0.984 (+/-0.004).
2 cross overs show no significant differences (<2%) and involve cruises that are
thought to have no offset in silicate. This suggests that no adjustment would be
required.
CONCLUSION:
The regional analysis agrees with the idea that high quality nutrients
measurements were performed during the BEAGLE cruise.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for silicate
