74AB20020301 - salinity
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is -1.2 ppm.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (-0.7 +/-6.6
ppm).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
5 cross overs were analyzed, but 1 is discarded (with cruise 35MF20040103)
because it compares only a few measurements collected between 1500m and 2000m.
The average of the 4 considered cross overs is -0.8 (+/-0.8) ppm.
All cross overs show no significant differences (<5 ppm) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no significant offset in salinity. This suggests that
no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for salinity.

UPDATE:
After correction of the whole dataset these 2 cross overs with cruises
317519950922 and 316N1994120 show offsets of 2.6 (+/-2.1) umol/kg and 4.9
(+/-0.6) umol/kg, respectively and the inversion suggests an adjustment of -4.4
(+/-1.6) umol/kg. The latter suggestion agrees with the PI’s recommendation to
decrease TCO2 by 4 umol/kg (Alvarez et al., subm. 2008 ).
Based on this I suggest an adjustment of -4 umol/kg for TCO2.

Only two cross-overs with reliable cruises.
Only small deviations for these 2 cross-overs within the limit for adjustment.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is -2.4 umol/kg.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (0.0 +/-3.0
umol/kg).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
4 cross overs were analyzed, but 1 is discarded (with cruise 35MF20040103)
because it compares only a few measurements collected between 1500m and 2000m.
The average of the 3 considered cross overs is -4.6 (+/-8.7) umol/kg.
2 cross overs show no significant differences (<5 umol/kg) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no offset in alkalinity. This suggests that no
adjustment would be required.
Note that the other cross over shows an offset of 14.4 (+/-9.1) umol/kg with
cruise INDIGO1 which is known to have high alkalinity values (by 16 umol/kg
according to this study or 6 umol/kg according to GLODAP).
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for alkalinity.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 1.011.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests that an adjustment of 1.02 could be
required (1.018 +/-0.019).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
5 cross overs were analyzed, but 1 is discarded (with cruise 35MF20040103)
because it compares only a few measurements collected between 1500m and 2000m.
The average of the 4 considered cross overs is 0.998 (+/-0.015).
All cross overs show no significant differences (<2%) and all but 1 (with cruise
74DI19950106) involve cruises that are thought to have no offset in phosphate.
This suggests that no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses disagree, the global inversion suggesting that
a small adjustment could be required (but not warranted due to the uncertainty
attached to the result of the inversion). No adjustment is preferred as it
agrees with a previous intercomparison analysis (Marta Alvarez, personal
communication).
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for phosphate.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 1.035.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (0.996
+/-0.012).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
5 cross overs were analyzed, but 1 is discarded (with cruise 35MF20040103)
because it compares only a few measurements collected between 1500m and 2000m.
The average of the 4 considered cross overs is 0.969 (+/-0.021).
All cross overs show offsets below 1, ranging from 0.943 to 0.986, which
suggests that the cruise would have high nitrate values. The lowest offset is
found with cruise 74DI19950106 which is thought to have high nitrate values as
well. The mean offset indicated by of the 3 other cross overs is 1.023
(+/-0.014). This suggests that an adjustment of 0.98 could be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses disagree, the global inversion suggesting no
adjustment whereas the regional analysis suggests an adjustment of 0.98. The
latter is preferred as it agrees with a previous intercomparison analysis (Marta
Alvarez, personal communication).
Based on this I suggest an adjustment of 0.98 for nitrate.

The average of all cross overs is 1.051.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests that an adjustment of 0.98 could be
required (0.980 +/-0.021).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
5 cross overs were analyzed, but 1 is discarded (with cruise 35MF20040103)
because it compares only a few measurements collected between 1500m and 2000m.
The average of the 4 considered cross overs is 1.054 (+/-0.058).
All cross overs but 1 (with cruise 74DI19950106) show differences around 2% and
involve cruises that are thought to have no offset in silicate. This suggests
that an adjustment of 0.98 could be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest an adjustment of 0.98 for silicate.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 0.998.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (0.999
+/-0.006).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
4 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 0.999 (+/-0.006).
All cross overs show no significant differences (<1%) and involve cruises that
are thought to have no offset in oxygen. This suggests that no adjustment would
be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for oxygen.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):

74AB20020301 - phosphate

74AB20020301 - nitrate

All cross overs show no significant differences (<5 ppm) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no significant offset in salinity. This suggests that
no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for salinity.

Only two cross-overs with reliable cruises.
Only small deviations for these 2 cross-overs within the limit for adjustment.
So no adjustment suggested.
