74DI20041213 - salinity
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is -3.9 ppm.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (+4.0 +/-7.5
ppm).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
6 cross overs were analyzed, but 1 is discarded due to large uncertainty (with
cruise 74DI19950106). The average of the 5 considered cross overs is -2.1
(+/-1.1) ppm.
All cross overs show no significant differences (<5 ppm) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no significant offset in salinity. This suggests that
no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for salinity.

74DI20041213 - tco2
GLOBAL ANALYSIS:
No good cross over (< 3 stations for one or the two cruises).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
3 cross overs were analyzed, but the cruise considered here only has 1 or 2 deep
TCO2 profiles to be compared to the others, which makes the comparison highly
uncertain.
1 cross over shows no significant differences (+1.2 +/-1.9 umol/kg), but
involves the cruise 74DI20041103 which is thought to have slightly high TCO2
values (by 4 umol/kg).This suggests that the cruise could also have slightly
high TCO2 values .
The other cross overs show offsets of -13.9 umol/kg and -6.4 umol/kg and involve
cruises which are known to have high TCO2 values (GEOSECS_INDIAN by about 23
umol/kg and INDIGO1 by about 10 umol/kg, according to this study and GLODAP).
When the suggested offsets are taken into account, the 3 cross overs indicate an
offset between +4 and +9 umol/kg. This suggests that a small adjustment could be
required.
CONCLUSION:
All cross-overs (found at 45S) show high TCO2 values for this cruise (between +4
and +9 umol/kg), which suggests that an adjustment could be required. Because
this result is based on cross-overs with historical data, one can not exclude
that part of this signal may reflect the invasion of anthropogenic carbon in the
Southern Ocean. However, the anthropogenic signal is expected to be very low in
deep waters found at 45S (if any), certainly lower than the offset detected
here.
Based on this I suggest an adjustment of -4 umol/kg.

REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
6 cross overs were analyzed, but 1 of them is discarded due to large uncertainty

account the average of all cross overs is 1.009 (+/-0.008). This suggests that
no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:

74DI20041213 - silicate
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 1.068.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests that an adjustment of 0.92 could be
required (0.921 +/-0.025).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
6 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 1.056 (+/-0.071).
Only 1 cross over shows no significant differences (<2%), but it involves the
cruise GEOSECS_INDIAN which is thought to have high silicate values (western
station). When the suggested offsets are taken into account the average of all
cross overs is 1.063 (+/-0.009). This suggests that an adjustment of 0.94 could
be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses suggest that an adjustment would be required,
but they result in slightly different numbers (0.92 and 0.94, respectively). The
lowest adjustment is preferred.
Based on this I suggest an adjustment of 0.94 for silicate.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 0.990.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests that an adjustment of 1.02 could be
required (1.018 +/-0.008).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
6 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 0.991 (+/-0.020).
5 cross overs show no significant differences (<1%) and 4 of them involve
cruises that are thought to have no significant offset in oxygen. This suggests
that no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses disagree, the global inversion suggesting that
an adjustment of 1.02 could be required. This result, however, is not coherent
with the analysis of individual cross overs (see Cruise plot file: RC_SO).
Because the latter is supported by the regional analysis, it is likely that the
inversion has failed here.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for oxygen.

74DI20041213 - oxygen

74DI20041213 - phosphate
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 0.987.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (1.011
+/-0.054).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
6 cross overs were analyzed, but 1 of them is discarded due to large uncertainty
(with cruise 74DI19950106). The average of the 5 considered cross overs is 0.996
(+/-0.018).
3 cross overs show no significant differences (<2%) but only 1 involves a cruise
that is thought to have no significant offset in phosphate (cruise
GEOSECS_INDIAN). When the offsets suggested for the other cruises are taken into
account the average of all cross overs is 1.009 (+/-0.008). This suggests that
no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for phosphate.

74DI20041213 - nitrate
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 1.004.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (1.012
+/-0.034).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
6 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 1.005 (+/-0.014).
5 cross overs show no significant differences (<2%) and all but 1 (with cruise
74DI19950106) involve cruises that are thought to have no significant offset in
nitrate. This suggests that no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for nitrate.
